Hi Carol. It sounds like you’re tensing up when you’re using mic and that’s probably because you’re hearing your voice very differently – not “naturally”, ie bouncing off the walls, but artifically, through the sound system, and you’re trying to make adjustments that are resulting in tension. Try to relax when you’re on the mic and don’t worry about the sound you’re making – just control the things that are in your power to control: your posture, your breath, your mouth shape and facial expression. Ask someone you trust to listen to you singing on the mic and let you know how it sounds. Better still, listen to yourself on the mic through headphones or record yourself. And if you’re still struggling, perhaps you could find a singing teacher who specialises in contemporary singing to give you a lesson or two on mic technique.

I hope that helps. Do let us know how you get on.
