My community choir has been singing from memory (3 part harmony) for a few years now. I find it is through repetition. They learn with their scores until about 3-4 weeks before performance. I encourage them to rely on their memory and their confidence in having thoroughly learned their parts. With no books in their hands they can watch me right through. It makes such a difference. We are in Adelaide, South Australia.

You’re so right, Jeanette – it’s fantastic to have all eyes on you as a conductor.

Thank you Victoria and Christine for some great tips here
One thing I have found helpful is to work on small sections of a piece at a time ( first concentrating on lyrics then on melody then putting both together with the scores put away )I’m so enjoying your podcasts and plan to take advantage of the professional resources subscription next year
Seasons greetings and thank you for this wonderful lifeline for community choir directors
